http://keyofnik.tumblr.com/sm-rewatch edit: Neue Adresse: http://keyofjetwolf.tumblr.com
Hier mal ein Beispiel:
Jet Wolf schrieb:
Something I’ve always found very interesting about this — okay actually I’ve found many things interesting about this, but the one that’s leaping out at me right now — is how covering up Luna’s crescent moon mark seems to block all higher brain functions.
She could just be panicking of course. Can hardly blame her for that. But the way this is shot, it’s like peeling back the band-aid actually awakens Luna to who she’s supposed to be.
(And let’s take a second to appreciate that Usagi then did for Luna what Luna will do for her later, in a nice bit of synchronicity.)
Which then begs the question, how exactly does that work? Since I plan to ignore the whole bit about Luna and Artemis having human forms up until the moment the anime makes it so can’t ignore it anymore, then the question becomes, how do the cats? If covering up the crescent moon reduces them to being like regular earth cats, that has to be the key.

Things to love: 1. Tuxedo Kamen with his satisfied little smile, and I have to think driving a bus through a dimensional tear in time and space has fulfilled this lifelong dream he never knew he had until just this moment. 2. Tuxedo Kamen with his seatbelt fastened because SAFETY COUNTS. 3. But not enough to make the girls go sit their asses down and not lean forward as they pass through this potentially turbulent time/space rift in a flying bus that is towing other flying buses. Because fuck the girls I guess. 4. You’d think he’d at least want to tuck Luna protectively under his cape or put her in a carrier or something though. 5. Usagi SO EXCITED TO SEE AMI. 6. Rei’s expression. Because listening to a talking cat and turning into a reincarnated magical planetary warrior who can spout fire from her fingertips and destroy very real monsters before escaping from another dimension in a flying bus driving by a tuxedo-wearing guy who appeared out of nowhere is just not where she expected her day to end when she got up that morning.

RIGHT. So then this. This one simple little thing that means so much. What shall I babble about first? How about what a moment of remarkable and unexpected insight this was from Usagi? Usagi, dear thing though she is, isn’t exactly wallowing in introspection. She feels things, she doesn’t think them; pretty much a Stephen Colbert joint — she doesn’t think with her head, she thinks with her gut. Figuring out the whys, understanding and learning from her mistakes, these are not Usagi trademarks. Her coming up with a plan at all is actually kind of amazing, but this is taking it to another level. Usagi hasthought this thing through. She sat down and considered what the bad guys would do. Then she seriously looked at herself, determined her weaknesses, and set about mitigating them. USAGI did this. That is incredible. And where does Usagi turn for strength where she’s weakest? Where else? This is even more a huge deal when you consider that the Moon Wand has been specifically described as symbol of leadership since it first appeared. And, as this episode reminded us, Usagi has had a deep paranoia about Rei wanting to usurp her; at this point it’s almost always the first thing she goes to when she’s getting all up in Rei’s face. Makes sense: Usagi got to be the princess, Usagi got the guy, Usagi got to be the special one, and Rei wasn’t exactly quiet about her feelings on all that. It’d seem Rei was the worst possible choice, but surprise, Usagi thought about that, too, and she realized that when all was said and done, Rei was who she trusted most. She trusted Rei to be able to hold out against whatever the Dark Kingdom would do. And she trusted Rei to give it back when they were done. And Rei gets it. She’s pretty much the queen of things unsaid. She gets it.
The Moonlight Knight, making about as much sense as you’d expect from a Japanese man wearing Arabian clothing and speaking French.

OH THAT REMINDS ME
Minako said that TIger’s Eye picked her up at a club.
So let’s everybody think about all that this implies.
Minako went to a club. Presumably alone, at least that night, since nobody had any idea about this. Minako’s 15, so for a guy looking like Tiger’s Eye to have been in that club, I’m going to guess it wasn’t a pre-teen hangout.
Until told otherwise, I’m going to assume that it works in Japan kind of like it works in the states, and there’s an age limit to get in to a place that (I will reasonably assume) serves alcohol.
So basically Minako’s got herself a fake ID, and is going to clubs, alone, to meet cute biker dudes who want to be roadies.
NOW HERE ARE THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
1. How long as this been going on? Was that her first visit?
2. Did she go alone? Did one of the other girls go with her? Was it Rei, and that’s an extra layer of Rei being pissed? Was it Mako, who maybe freaked out a bit at the noise and the LYING and had to leave early?
3. If Minako did go alone, WILL THE OTHERS INSIST ON GOING NEXT TIME.
4. How soon before I write a story where all the girls get fake IDs (courtesy of Minako) and go to this club as a group, with Ami freaking the entire way about memorizing every last detail about her fake identity up to and including an elaborate backstory in case she’s asked extra questions, and Mako afraid to talk to anyone at all and unable to meet any eyes, and Rei acting like this is no big deal and she’s done this a hundred times before now and ordering a drink and getting the name wrong and then yelling at the bartender for not knowing the name of this TOTALLY REAL DRINK THIS IS THE WORST BAR I HAVE EVER BEEN IN, and Usagi taking two sips of whatever drink Rei gets and then dancing with everybody in the entire bar for the next two hours, and Minako not actually touching a single drop of alcohol but still climbing on tables and dancing and sitting in strangers’ laps and acting the DRUNKEST OF THEM ALL.
Oops, I guess I already kind of did write that story.
HEY, WELCOME TO JET WOLF’S LIVEBLOG THAT SHOULD HAVE ENDED FIVE HOURS AGO.
Das hier finde ich auch sehr interessant:
Zitat :
Anonymous asked you: Why do you believe both Queen and Princess Serenity were bad people?
my-crazy-awesome-sox asked you: I’d love to hear your headcanon of what Princess Serenity and her mother were like and just how Usagi is a better person than Serenity and Serenity a better person than her mother.
Before I go into this, obviously this is all just my brain, which is admittedly not the nicest of places sometimes. The Silver Millennium part of the story is just tantalizingly enough to get you fanatically interested, but stops short of giving many actual details. So this is what I extrapolate from what little we DO know, and am building on for my own (still in-progress) personal SilMil headcanon. Your mileage may vary.
I don’t think Princess Serenity was a bad person, I think Usagi is a BETTER person.
I think Usagi has a greater capacity for empathy, and the ability to move beyond her selfishness — or to embrace it for unselfish results, is perhaps more accurate. Princess Serenity, I see as being a good person, but a spoiled one, She’s been indulged and doted on her entire life, and as a result she can’t see beyond what she wants. What she wants is paramount. That whole Endymion and Earth thing? Terrible idea. TERRIBLE. Kind of triggers the end of everything. I completely believe she was repeatedly told what a horrible, dangerous idea it was. (She isn’t surprised when he’s being run off by her own palace guards, for example.) But Serenity wanted Endymion, and the delicate situation between the Earth and the Moon didn’t matter. She ignored everything that didn’t give her what she wanted.
Usagi, in a similar situation, WOULDN’T ignore all that. She’d find a way to make it work out for everybody, because that’s what Usagi DOES. She’s not giving up on her love, but she’s not going to hear about war breaking out between two planets and the hundreds and thousands of deaths it will cause and say “meh, kissies".
Queen Serenity, now that’s a different thing. I’m still not sure about the WHYS of Queen Serenity yet. I’m not sure of her backstory, or about the events that lead her to the place where I see her. I’m not even entirely sure where that place IS, to be honest, only that it’s not great.
The thing with Queen Serenity is in the situations leading up to the end of the Moon Kingdom, and what they imply about her that they exist.
The first and most glaring is the war with Earth. That’s Beryl/Metallia’s manipulation at work, absolutely. But the thing is that I can’t see them corrupting or brainwashing AN ENTIRE PLANET TO WAR without there being really fertile ground in which to plant those seeds. The people of Earth are to the point where violent rebellion seems a great option, and you don’t START there. That is the place where you finish. So then the question has to be, “How did they get there?", and there isn’t a single answer that has anything nice to say about Queen Serenity.
The there’s the Senshi themselves, and they’re actually kind of problematic. When you cut away everything else, these are four girls whose job it is to die for one.
The setup our girls have is a very different one. They may have been destined to the power, but they CHOSE the life. They were born to protect Usagi, but they do it because it’s what they want. The fact that there’s no real power structure at work here helps tremendously with that. Usagi’s the Princess, but she doesn’t COMMAND anybody. The most regal anybody ever gets with her is Setsuna, and even then it’s more a gesture of respect than an indication of superiority. (Had Pluto felt beholden to Usagi, S could have turned out very differently.)
In the Silver Millennium though, with the Moon Kingdom and Queen Serenity, you DO have a power structure. Queen Serenity isn’t a figurehead, SHE IS QUEEN. So when you look at Princess Serenity and her Senshi, what you see is four girls who have been gathered to protect the one. What is a deeply touching gesture of love and friendship in “our" time becomes something overshadowed by command and decree in the Silver Millennium.
I haven’t decided yet if I believe the SilMil Senshi were in fact literal princesses of their respective planets, or if “Princess" is merely a symbolic title they’re given. But if they ARE legit princesses, that just makes the whole thing so much worse. “Give me your sovereign daughter, so that she may fight and die for mine."
I don’t think Queen Serenity is evil, but I don’t think she’s good. Dramatically flawed, achingly selfish, and frighteningly narrow-visioned, are perhaps the most prominent things I see, though inspiring great love and loyalty regardless.
These are all pieces to a puzzle that I’m still putting together. I’m not sure where my final vision of Queen Serenity will end, but wherever it is, it’s unreachably far from Usagi. I don’t believe in Utopia, and I definitely don’t see Queen Serenity as a benevolent force of abstract goodness.

Zitat :
Wait, really? So everyone has to shelter Ami from the horrible truth that her rival doesn’t also happen to look like a teen supermodel? That’s what all this is about?
[...]
From the perspective of the girls though, it really feels like they’re trying to “protect” Ami from the nerdy-looking guy. Like this whole “She can never know!” thing is presented as something to hide from her so her “first love” doesn’t turn out to be the short dude with spikey hair and thick glasses.
They even go so far as to make that a misleading joke. They go from showing you what he really looks like to Ami wailing “Oh nooooo!!” Turns out that’s NOT what’s happening, but that’s what you’re bracing for, because the understanding is that “nobody should have to find out this is the guy crushing on you/being crushed on by you”.
So even if there’s a deeper story reason (which there could be, though I’m not feeling especially charitable to giving the story much deeper meaning here), the surface one at least seems pretty clearly “run far away from unattractive people”. I have to say that’s a pretty shit message in general, but especially in a story like this which is REPEATEDLY about the value of inner strength and not judging on appearances. It’s not the first time something like this has happened, but it’s always, always so disappointing when it does.

Jet Wolf schrieb:
SYMBOLICALLY EXPLODING SIGILS LET’S GO
First I want to say how much I love that this is in the first twenty seconds. TWENTY SECONDS into the Moon Pride video, and they’re completely killing all the Senshi (well almost).
Violently.
I really appreciate how they did this. By rendering it all in symbolism, it hurts in ways that you don’t expect, because it leaves so much to your mind. Your mind is a terrible places, things should never be left up to it.
But that was the decision Moon Pride made, and now we all must suffer. So let’s begin.
I don’t know if the order we see these is important. Because Senshi stuff so often goes in join order by default, the only time we can be completely positive order is significant is when they break it. So with Mercury being first, does that mean Mercury died first? Maybe. I don’t know it really matters all that much though.
I really need to take a second to appreciate the detail in which they created the explosion though. I kept in all the frames because look at that care. Every droplet has been lovingly rendered. THEY NEEDED YOU TO FEEL EVERY LAST MOLECULE OF MERCURY’S DESTRUCTION, ARE YOU FEELING IT.
Something that stands out to me in Mercury’s death — because make no mistake, what we’re seeing here is the very moment the Senshi died — is that it’s surprisingly violent. Mars will have it beat, as we’ll see in a moment, but it’s far more destructive than Jupiter’s and that wouldn’t have been something I’d have expected. I’ll come back to this later in the video when we actually see the Senshi.
I like the perspective on this as well. Looking at it straight on, the Mercury symbol explodes in a burst, kind of like popping a water balloon. But you can also envision it like you’re standing above a cool, clear body of water and dropping the symbol into it. This is the geyser rushing up to you, which turns the moment into displacement of the water when it hits, rather than an explosion. Conceptually, I enjoy both. That Mercury has a core of surprising fury that you’d never expect to blow up in your face, as well as the idea that her death causes violent ripples that stretch well beyond the death itself. (In this, standard order and all, I really do believe Mercury died first.)
Mars. Mars is a supernova. Mars doesn’t just die, Mars fucking incinerates the galaxy. More than any of the others, Mars’ is especially violent. Her moment of death is particularly striking. Where Mercury looked like a pop, Mars is like a lance shooting across the image in a study of cause and effect. Mars was struck down that day, but the image leaves no question whatsoever that it was the very last thing they and every one of their friends in a five mile radius would ever do.
Something interesting that I noticed while making these gifs is that Mars is notably shorter than everyone else. Mercury and Jupiter are both 18 frames. Venus was 19, which beyond just Venus’ part could be a timing issue as it’s where we’re moving out of the sequence. But Mars is only 14. That may not sound like much difference, but as anyone who’s ever worked on music videos can tell you, even one frame can mean everything. Plus it’s FIRE, and if there’s one thing they love to play with in all this, it’s fire effects. They just give us thirteen lovingly rendered frames of Mercury’s water explosion. So why cut Mars’ fire short? It’s especially interesting because the “filler” frames aren’t an extension of the following scene of Serenity, but this:
I didn’t include them with the Mars’ destruction in the gif because the flash to several frames of mostly white doesn’t flow especially well, but I do think they’re intended to be part of her sequence. And holy crap. The impression it leaves is one of Mars’s death doing as much damage as she did in her life. That in perfect Mars fashion, when she was finally dealt a blow she couldn’t push through, she embraced the inevitable with everything she had. Mars died with every bit the passion and dedication with which Mars lived.
I cannot get over how fragile Jupiter’s looks. Unlike Mercury, Jupiter doesn’t pop. Unlike Mars, Jupiter doesn’t explode. Jupiter SHATTERS. Jupiter shatters, and her pieces float away. The center simply cannot hold. I’m drawn to how we see two blasts of Jupiter’s power, something completely unique to her. That, and how even as her sigil is in pieces, they continue to move as though they haven’t realized what’s happened yet.
The impression this gives me is that Jupiter’s death comes as a huge shock to her. (Uh, no pun intended.) I see her rampaging through the battlefield, taking wounds but they mean nothing. Killing everything that would threaten to harm those she loves. She’s a colossus, relentless, impossible to slow. And she doesn’t slow, she just … stops. Her body gives out, and nobody is more surprised than Jupiter when it happens. Everything that says about Jupiter’s determination and optimism makes me want to cry.
And finally Venus.
Oh Venus.
Venus, who doesn’t shatter at all. Venus, whose sigil remains intact. Venus, who appears untouched and whole.
Venus, the only one not against a giant empty void. Venus, who must continue to turn, surrounded by the drops and the ashes and the shards of everyone she loved. Venus, who remembers.
I think this is so key to what drives Minako. They all failed, but Venus is the one who remembers what that felt like. Minako can relive it, if she tries (and sometimes when she doesn’t), because Venus can’t let it go. This image, and one that we’ll see later, are so Venus that it HURTS. She doesn’t die. She doesn’t get even that. She has to feel her Princess die, feel the others die, but she has to live. Every particle there represents Venus’ failure, and all she can do is stand in the center of it all.
Venus is the only one not alone in her image, and that makes it the most isolating of them all.
Erstmal: Wow.
Was meint ihr?

I just wrote this huge fucking post that should’ve been simple, but when do I ever really do simple. In the process of making it, I was skimming through a bunch of episodes to refresh my memory of how certain scenes looked, get screencaps, the whole deal.
Michiru, as I said, was giving me tremendous trouble. Every scene i could think of for her wouldn’t work for assorted non-relevant reasons. initially, I didn’t want to go with this one either, not because I don’t love the scene (I SO DO), but because the image wasn’t entirely what I wanted. The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that I really did quite like it, and so went into get the cap.
“But wait,” I said to myself, “I better check the second time Michiru does her ‘unzip me’ thing, to see if they look any different and which one I’d like best.”
I WAS COMPLETELY UNPREPARED FOR HOW DIFFERENT THEY WERE
This is Episode 180 (”The Brightness of the Calling Stars! Haruka and Michiru Enter the Battle”), in the absolutely DIVINE scene where Seiya comes into Michiru’s dressing room and she proceeds to fuck up their everything. I talked about this episode a lot (A LOT A LOT), so I won’t repeat myself. The liveblog of this scene begins on this page of the backup, and will fill in all the context. I’m just going to focus on these two caps.
Because holy shit, these two caps.
It would’ve been so easy for the animators to just reuse the first animation. It’s the same angle at the same distance doing the same action. They use those kinds of shortcuts all the time. Remember, this is back when animation was hand-drawn, so every single frame had to be sketched and penciled and inked and painted. Hours of labour and associated costs. EVERY SCENE matters just that much more, because the time and effort to make it is so much higher.
And they chose to animate the same gesture twice in two completely different ways. They knew precisely how important it was to the character piece to make it clear beyond any doubt that Michiru’s motivation in these actions is worlds apart.
In the first, Michiru is asking Seiya to unzip her. It’s part of her grander plan to play Seiya like her violin, keeping them off-balance, ensuring she has complete control in her devastating subtle ways. Despite how the gesture appears, this is Michiru ruling this situation with an iron fist. Note how she’s standing completely straight, her expression light, but her eyes wide and focused completely on Seiya. Michiru doesn’t want Seiya to unzip her, she wants to know how Seiya REACTS to being asked to do it. There’s a beautiful sharpness to Michiru’s expression, and it’s the reason why I picked it to be my “Holy Grail” Michiru cel.
But then that second cap. Holy shit, that second cap.
Michiru is now asking Haruka to unzip her, and EVERYTHING CHANGES. When she’s making this gesture to Haruka, there’s no denying what’s behind it. This is Michiru the seductress. She’s all but posing as a pin-up here, arched neck, half-lidded eyes, coquettish glance.
Anybody ever confused over where Michiru’s thoughts and intentions were at in that scene, they need look no further than these two caps. Michiru wants information from Seiya.
Michiru straight up WANTS Haruka.
